PhD Scholarship Molecular Cancer Pathology Scholarship School of Medicine The University of Western Sydney's School of Medicine is seeking an excellent Doctoral candidate to undertake study in the area of Molecular Cancer Pathology.
About the Project Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignancy in NSW and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. It is the second most common cancer by incidence and third most common cause of cancer-related deaths. About 30% of CRC cases are rectal cancers. They have poorer prognosis and increased rate of local recurrence compared to colonic cancers. Radiation therapy (RT) may be employed to reduce risk and improve the local control for more advanced stage rectal cancer. Histopathological observations indicate that only a proportion of tumours respond to RT. The molecular basis of this observation is not adequately investigated or reported in the current literature, and its elucidation will be important to identify biomarkers that can be used to predict patient response to RT.
The project will involve the elucidation of biomarkers of risk, disease progression and treatment outcome in CRC, with the aim of refining the stratification of patients for evaluation of new surgical procedures, new treatment modalities, and identifying patients for selective adjuvant therapy. CRC stem cell behaviour and novel epigenetic biomarkers that are predictive of disease progression, prognostic outcome and response to chemotherapy will also be investigated. Essential Criteria • Good Bachelor Honours degree (Class 1 or 2.1), or equivalent qualifications and/or experience • Research or professional experience in a relevant field • Highly motivated to undertake multi-disciplinary research • Possess excellent communication and writing skills • Background and skills in cell and molecular biology
What does the scholarship provide? • Tax-free stipend of $33,000 per annum and a funded place in the doctoral degree Need more information? • To discuss a potential project please contact Professor C Soon Lee at soon.lee@uws.edu.au OR Dr Joo Shin at j.shin@uws.edu.au ; telephone: + 61 2 9772 6860 • Contact the Office of Research Services to discuss candidature and scholarship conditions: HDRscholarships@uws.edu.au • Find out more about the research being undertaken in the School of Medicine, please see: http://www.uws.edu.au/medicine/som/research How to apply
